A Brief History of Washstands
Although first introduced in the second half of the 18th Century it wasn't until the 1860-70s that marble
was used as a more appropriate work surface. Tile and marble backs arrived very shortly afterwards and by
1890's towel rails and occasionally shaving mirrors were added. Placed upon the marble top would be a jug
and bowl. This would be used to wash and clean the occupants of the bedroom. The ensuite of the day. Due to
the very nature of it's purpose, water damage would be commonplace and as we purchase washstands almost all
of them are refurbished. This could include a full strip and polish or if possible a revival of the original
polish. All restoration is done sympathetically and we do our utmost to keep things as original as possible.
Please keep in mind that these are antiques and as such even after restoration could have minor blemishes
under the polish etc. Of the washstands that we stock most have been picked for their originality, beauty and
quality. These pieces are not now confined to bedrooms but are used throughout the home and business, many
for drinks cabinets, hairdressers, company toilets, etc, etc.
