A fine quality coffee/games table from the Aesthetic Movement period, circa 1875. Slightly reduced in height to a more useable and desirable coffee table , better fitting into today’s smaller homes. Typically set onto an ebonized backdrop is mainly rich Amboyna veneers throughout. The top having a rounded brass border, which gives way to an amazing , intricate brass rail that is set all the way round with Sevres style medallions. All sat on gilded columns with a matching pair of stretchers, beneath which are 4 Amboyna inlaid splayed legs. Then you swivel the top and open up the most striking red baize card surface, framed with a tooled leather border , in turn with more cross banding and if not enough, the most delicate Boxwood and green Pearwood stringing. Clearly this table has seen little use and was probably an expensive gift..far too good to use.
